Cremation with Confidence

Respect. Dignity. Peace of Mind.

As the only Cremation with Confidence™ provider in our area, we pledge to abide by a strict ethical code and perform the cremation process according to an exclusive 10-step cremation process. We invite you to read each one of those steps below. If you have questions about the cremation process, we encourage you to reach out to us or come visit our East Location. We are happy to show you our crematories and answer any questions you have about cremation.

  • Your Loved One Never Leaves Our Care
Many other funeral homes hire third- party crematories, typically located in a warehouse district. These funeral homes transfer your loved one to outside cremation services, making it impossible for the funeral home to manage and supervise the cremation.

At Downing & Lahey, we own and operate two crematories at our east location. Throughout the entire process – from the transfer to our funeral home to the completion of the cremation – your loved one never leaves our care.

  • Safeguarding Personal Identity
To ensure security, a personal identification band is placed on your loved one the moment they are transferred to our care.

  • Family Identification
We will ask you or a representative to positively identify your loved one prior to cremation.

  • Acquiring Paperwork
During your arrangement conference with one of Downing & Lahey’s funeral directors, we will gather the information needed to acquire the cremation paperwork. Per Kansas cremation requirements, we must have a signed death certificate, family authorization, and a county coroner’s permit to begin the cremation.

  • Checks and Balances
Two individuals, a state-certified crematory operator and a funeral home staff member, will review all cremation paperwork and permits. This is to ensure authorizations and permits have been received and properly documented. Once all documentation is verified, both staff members must sign the cremation control form prior to cremation.

  • Cremation Log Book
Immediately prior to the cremation process, your loved one is taken to the cremation chamber and their personal identification is noted in our cremation log book. This log shows their name, the date of the cremation, and the identification number.

Two individuals, a state-certified crematory operator and a funeral home staff member, will verify that the name of the person they are cremating matches the name on their identification band.

  • Details During the Cremation
The cremation control form is placed on the outside of the cremation chamber during the cremation process.

The stainless steel identification tag is placed in the cremation chamber with your loved one, and they are cremated in an approved cremation container. The cremation container you select will provide dignity and respect to the cremation process. We offer a wide variety of caskets and containers that are designed specifically for cremation.

If you or another member of the family wish to witness the cremation, you are welcome to do so from the comfort of our viewing room. Please ask to see our facilities – we will be happy to give you a tour.

  • Details After the Cremation
After the cremation is complete, the cremated remains are placed with the stainless steel identification tag into an urn. A label that includes your loved one’s name and the identification number is affixed to the urn.

  • Return of the Cremated Remains
Our staff will notify you to schedule a time for you to receive your loved one’s cremated remains.

Only those individuals listed on the cremation authorization and control form will be allowed to receive the cremated remains. Photo identification may be required.

  • Celebration of Life
We will assist you in planning a funeral or memorial service, either before or after the cremation, to appropriately celebrate the life of your loved one. A meaningful ceremony provides an opportunity for family and friends to pay tribute to their life and share the memories of a lifetime.
