Our Family Serving Yours

Family-owned funeral homes, such as Downing & Lahey build their reputation by delivering on their promises. For us, this means surpassing expectations as we serve our neighbors in East and West Wichita.

Our family has owned and operated Downing & Lahey since 1913. We realize our neighbors trust our expert staff to walk alongside them during some of life’s most difficult times. We listen and we care, and our decades of professional experience help us highlight your loved one’s unique personality at the funeral and help you heal afterwards.

We remain a family-operated funeral home in every sense of the word. Downing & Lahey’s history in Wichita dates back to 1913 with the founding of City Undertaking by Charles Lahey & Earl Martin. Originally a furniture business and funeral parlor, City Undertaking operated in a storefront across from the old train station in downtown Wichita. In 1915, the furniture part of the business was discontinued, and then in 1918, City Undertaking moved to 922 E. Douglas.

The name of the business was changed to Lahey & Martin Mortuary in 1926 and another move was made to 1401 E. Douglas. In 1938 Charles Lahey purchased Earl Martin’s interest and the firm became Lahey Mortuary. Tom Lahey, Charles’ son, joined the business in 1948. Upon Charles’ death in 1949, Tom Lahey continued to build and expand Lahey Mortuary, eventually relocating to 4820 E. Central.
