June Poston, 96, passed away on December 7, 2020, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, Wichita, Kansas. June was born Wanda June Wilkins on July 25, 1924, in Ada, Oklahoma, to Ora and Granville Wilkins. June spent her childhood playing with her three sisters, Mary, Jo, and Jane. The four sisters were excellent harmonizers and enjoyed singing together. Later in life she was an enthusiastic aunt to their children, Pat, Jan, Judy, Johnny, Janey, and Cheryl. As a teenager in Clinton, Oklahoma, June enjoyed playing sports. Her favorites were tennis, swimming, and diving. She moved to Wichita with her family during World War II to work for the war effort. She enjoyed telling stories of working on assembly lines at Boeing and often joked that she would climb through the airplane windows for repairs because she was the only one small enough to fit. After V.E. Day, she married a young Navy Seaman named Lloyd E. Poston. Together they had two sons, Ed and Joe. As a married woman, June enjoyed motherhood, supporting her husband’s career in the oil business, and playing golf and bridge. She tried to teach her family bridge, but no one could match her keen mind and skill. June, an avid golfer, spent many happy years with her friends from Crestview Country Club traveling to golf tournaments and playing countless hands of bridge. In her mid-fifties, June began her most cherished role as Nana to Brook, Elliott, Alex, and Elise, and eventually to Ben and Leah. She taught them all poker, gin rummy, and many other games. They loved to sit at her kitchen table and play for pennies all afternoon long. She supported their dreams and enriched their lives through travel. June’s life was further enriched by the blending of her family with the Prokop family. June spent her later years pursuing her interests and close relationships; her only regret was that her beloved husband, Lloyd, died far too soon. June is survived by her sister Jane Brown, sons Ed Poston (Annette) and Joe Poston (Sue), and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Contributions may be made to First Tee of Greater Wichita, P.O. Box 8313, Wichita, KS 67208. Graveside Service will be at 1:00 pm, Friday, December 11, 2020 at White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Services in care of Downing & Lahey East Mortuary.

Guestbook

  1. She was not aunt June to us, she was simply, June. Her nieces and nephews Pat, Jan, Judy, Johnny, Janey & Cheryl knew she was mom #2. June was the family anchor the one we all relied on. She was the lifelong best friend to her slightly younger sister, Jane. She was the wiser sister, one of 4, the determined one, the one who cared for all of us from her own father to her younger sister. She hosted numerous family events featuring food, fun, and love all around. She gave our family more than we gave her and she wanted it that way. Her grandkids Elliott, Brook, Alex, Elise, Justin, Andrea were first and foremost to her. Her memory will live within us all, her 6 grandkids, 7 great grand kids and her many great nieces and nephews. Her vitality her energy her passion for reading, cooking, bridge, golf, traveling, and family lives in us all. She was my aunt June.
